A.Kumar's Party

After the volleyball, we went to a party for A.Kumar, as he is leaving for Chennai. I was not really sure what to expect, having never been to a house party in India before.

After a short motorbike ride into Trivandrum, down some very narrow alleys, we arrived at the house. Upstairs the guys were just setting up, they laid newspaper out on the floor, and spread a selection of snacks and drinks. There were a couple of fish dishes, and a couple of chicken ones, plus salad, nuts and some dry mix that I don't know the name of.

We sat around the food and chatted, ate and drank whilst Jackie Chan performed on the TV. After a little while we watched a slideshow of photos from the Andaman Islands which someone had taken on their recent trip ( sorry, I can't remember who's they were).

Then a guitar came out, and the music started. Sangeet tried to persuade me to sing for them, but thankfully he gave up in the end. Singing was in a number of languages, including Hindi and English, and the songs were a mixture of traditional songs and the Eagles. Percussion was provided by spoons, bottles, and plastic stools, and it all sounded great (although the neighbours may disagree). I had a fantastic night, one that I won't forget in a hurry.

The sound on the video doesn't really do justice to how great it sounded in the room.
